FIRST-TIME BUYERS
Your First Home, Step by Step
A plain-language checklist from pre-approval to keys — with a real broker walking beside you.
Buying your first home is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. Here’s the honest truth: it’s less scary than it sounds — when someone walks you through it slowly. Chris has helped hundreds of first-timers across Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Washington County, and the wider Northeast Oklahoma market, and this is the roadmap he wishes every buyer had before they started.
Step 1 — Talk to a Lender First
Before you look at a single house, get pre-approved. It tells you what you can actually afford (not what a Zillow calculator says) and it makes your offer competitive. We can recommend local Bartlesville lenders on our Familiar Faces page.
Step 2 — Make Your Must-Haves List
Bedrooms. Bathrooms. Yard vs. no yard. Bartlesville proper vs. Dewey vs. Copan. School district. Commute. Chris will sit with you and figure out the difference between “must-have” and “nice-to-have” — because there IS a difference, and it matters.
Step 3 — Tour Homes (The Fun Part)
Chris will set up showings that fit YOUR schedule. Weekends, evenings, whenever. No pressure to make an offer, ever. Sometimes you tour twenty houses. Sometimes you know on the first one. Both are normal.
Step 4 — Make an Offer
Once you find the one, Chris writes the offer, negotiates on your behalf, and coordinates with the listing agent. We’ll advise on price strategy based on real comparable sales — not gut feel.
Step 5 — Inspection & Closing
Under contract? Now we schedule the inspection (see our Home Inspection Guide), coordinate the appraisal, and manage the paperwork to closing. Chris shows up at closing with you — because that’s when questions come up.
